Job Description


Department : Department of Youth Services Education Initiative
Title: Literacy Specialist
FLSA Status: Exempt
Supervisor: Title I and Targeted Learning Supports Coordinator
Salary: Union Scale

Bachelor's Degree from accredited college or university, Master’s Degree preferred
Massachusetts teacher licensure in Reading (all levels) preferred. English/Language Arts (8-12), or ESL (5-12)
Experience and/or training in research based reading/literacy programs
A minimum of 3 - 5 years of demonstrated successful teaching preferred

Interpret student intake data in order to determine reading proficiency
Diagnose and prescribe reading intervention for individual or small group instruction
Provide targeted reading intervention supports for students with identified need
Implement research-based reading interventions with a multi-sensory (Orton-Gillingham) foundation like

Corrective Reading, and Achieving Maximum Potential (AMP)
Incorporate technology into reading instruction. For example: Lexia software, text-to-speech, eBooks, and

NEO keyboards
Track student progress using a variety of informal reading inventories like the Diagnostic Assessment of

Reading (DAR), Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI), and fluency probes
Support youth literacy proficiency across the content areas
Work with site education team and other building staff in coordinating a schedule for delivering Title I

Prepare progress reports on Title I students as required for student conferences, and district level reporting
Co-plan and co-teach lessons when appropriate
Willing to learn and support, score, and interpret identified assessments, including, but not limited to:

General Assessment of Instructional Needs (GAIN), Wide Range of Achievement Test (WRAT), and WIDA

Support the administration of Massachusetts State Assessments including MCAS and proctor WIDA
ACCESS for English Language learners

Have experience with and ability to use informal reading inventories, diagnostic reading and writing
assessments, and how to implement fluency probes to monitor student progress

Participate fully in and share student data at Learning Teams and other student team meetings and staffings

Other Professional Expectations:
Participate in all training and professional development indicated by supervisor
Collaborate with site team in scheduling, integration of curriculum, and program procedures

Cultivate a classroom environment that is supportive and conducive to learning
Support pre and post testing required by Title I mandates and supervisor direction
Complete and submit appropriate reports and data as required by DYS & Title I
Develop and maintain personal professional development plan
Maintain effective/positive relationships with C.E.S., DYS, Vendors, and all other colleagues and

Maintain confidentiality of students, teachers, and classrooms
Maintain paperwork consistently and online data entry requirements appropriately and in a timely manner
Willing and able to drive to designated locations
Comply with all policies and procedures of host agency
Assume any additional responsibilities as directed by the Executive Director or designee

Physical Demands: Must be able to
Enter, exit, move through and between classrooms and program locations throughout the day. At some

locations this will mean moving between floors
Communicate and converse effectively in real time with youth and adults from multiple backgrounds and

Maintain situational awareness, including awareness of student activity and communication in fast-paced

secure residential treatment settings
Effectively handle job stress in the performance of duties
Use traditional and digital instructional technologies

Working Conditions:
Work is subject to interruption and redirection, and priorities may change during the course of a day due to

programming needs
Education is primarily conducted in an indoor classroom setting, with occasional programming outdoors,

in a gymnasium, greenhouse, or on field trips
Teachers are required to work both independently and collaboratively
Regular travel between programs on a planned and ad hoc basis is required. Occasional travel across the

Commonwealth for leadership meetings and professional development is also required
Limited evening hours are required for family events

Terms of Employment:
185/186 days, Monday through Friday – CES/DYS School calendar
8 hours per day with benefits according to CES Personnel Policies with limited evening hours
Teachers are part of a bargaining unit represented by SEIU 509
